Nineteen Years Back Today, a poem by Gobinda Biswas
Nineteen Years Back Today
Gobinda Biswas
Friend, since the day nineteen years have passed
At the pace of a young active river,
It seems only nineteen days have dropped
For the day still brightly glares in my heart
As if I was brutally crucified.
Friend, I can clearly see with my inner eyes
Now you are celebrating the day with great éclat,
In memory of the day nineteen years ago,
As if, the day is replayed as facsimile
As if the day has come back again.
Friend, then we had promised to each other
For fear of cruelly alone separation,
Sitting on the sea beach of melancholy tears
That we would live hand in hand
For this very birth and beyond, you know.
While everything was going on okay
And the Sun-God was approaching to us,
Suddenly the Nor’Wester appeared in the sky,
I was thrown away as decayed leaves
And lost into oblivion from you.
Like Queen Elizabeth you were sitting among the maids
As if Diana was smiling with starry fays
For her prince of the dreamland,
As Atalanta was waiting for her Melanion
He appeared and caught hold of your hand.
On the other side of the river Yamuna
Someone like Srikrishna was lamenting in grief
And shedding tears in agony for his lost love,
Like Alenkon,the sad Alenkon
Pal, he got melancholic and cried for losing you.
